What Types of Degree Programs Are Offered in Acoustic Engineering?
Acoustic engineering is offered at the bachelor's and master's degree levels. Audio engineering, although similar to acoustic engineering, is what you'll typically find at the associate's degree level. Acoustic engineering degree programs are usually part of a school's electrical or mechanical engineering departments. Undergraduate degrees are commonly awarded as Bachelor of Science degrees in engineering or mechanical engineering with concentrations in acoustics or acoustical engineering. Master of Engineering degrees are available in acoustics.

What Will My Courses Be Like?
In addition to general education courses, you'll take courses on calculus, statistics and basic engineering. Your curriculum includes coursework, lab sessions and music instruction. CAD is also a recommended course for the acoustics program. Depending on your degree program, you may have a choice of areas of interest, including musical acoustics, architectural acoustics, audio engineering or noise control and sound quality.
You may be required to complete a senior capstone project in a bachelor's degree program or a master's thesis in a master's degree program. Such a project will demonstrate your ability to identify an engineering problem, take it through all steps from analysis through testing and give an oral and written demonstration on your findings. What Are the Entrance Requirements?
As a student in an acoustic engineering degree program, you'll have to meet certain requirements prior to enrollment. Bachelor's degree programs don't have too many specific prerequisites, beyond those needed for general entrance into the program. If you're enrolling in a graduate program, you'll need to have a bachelor's degree and a GPA of 3.0 or higher in your undergraduate courses. Recent scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) may also be required. This program requires a strong background in physics, calculus and mathematics, including equations and complex variables.
Can I Learn Online?
Acoustic engineering degree programs may be found through distance learning, but they're rare. Online programs require you to have a computer with Internet access and an e-mail address. Your computer must meet software and hardware requirements set by program. Your coursework may be delivered through Web message boards, streaming audio and video, chat rooms and online presentations. You must meet the same requirements for an online program that you would for an on-campus acoustics program.
