What Kind of Bioethics Majors Can I Pursue?

While they're uncommon, bioethics programs can be found at the undergraduate level, but they're not available online. These programs award Bachelor of Arts in Bioethics and Bachelor of Science in Bioethics and Natural Sciences degrees. The majority of bioethics programs, however, are available to master's and doctoral degree-seeking students.

Bioethics programs are designed to provide you with a background in healthcare and to train you to understand the ethical concerns related to its delivery. Because most programs in bioethics are offered at the graduate level, you'll need to pursue further study before applying this knowledge in a career. You can go on to earn a degree in medicine, law, journalism, nursing, allied health and a variety of other disciplines that rely on or are affected by the moral judgment of healthcare professionals.

What Subjects Will I Study?

Coursework in bioethics programs at the undergraduate level covers public health, epidemiology and the collective healthcare of certain groups or demographics. You'll also learn about the health decisions that determine the health outcome of individuals.

Specific courses provide an overview of philosophy, sociology, psychology and ethics, which will help you weigh the logical and theoretical concerns involved with these concerns. Other coursework discusses the legal and regulatory framework that governs the healthcare field as a whole, as well as addressing medical technology, biology and chemistry. You can also take courses in anthropology, economics and environmental issues to learn about the external factors that influence bioethics decisions.

How Will I Use What I've Learned in the Workforce?

Once you've started a career, the knowledge you've acquired by studying bioethics will be used to evaluate how medical, legal and public policy issues should be addressed in the healthcare field. You'll also focus on individual medical decisions that deal with life support, drug testing, the rationing of care services and the allocation of resources.
