What Courses Will I Take in a Biology Degree Program?

That depends on where you are in your education. If you're just starting out and working towards earning a bachelor's degree, you'll take some introductory biology courses, as well as study anatomy and physiology, genetics, ecology, chemistry and physics. You'll also take some math classes and complete a senior capstone project. Depending on the program, you may have the option of specializing at the undergraduate level. Specializations include cell and molecular biology, marine biology and wildlife biology.

Master's level biology programs usually focus on a subfield, such as microbiology, so your courses will vary depending on what subject you choose to specialize in. Most programs will include participation in internships at laboratories, research centers, hospitals and private practices. A thesis will probably need to be written as well.

At the doctoral level, you'll participate in lab research rotations in areas such as neuroscience, ecology, bioinformatics, biophysics and computational biology. You'll also choose a specialization and complete a teaching assistantship.

Can I Earn a Biology Degree Online?

Online biology degrees are usually available at the master's level. You'll take the same courses as the on-campus programs and may even complete labs at home via a laboratory kit. Sometimes you might be required to visit the campus for labs, depending on the school. You might also need to take proctored or on-campus exams.

To enroll in one of the online programs, you'll need basic computer skills. You'll also need an active e-mail account to communicate with your professors. Other materials you might need include a high-speed modem, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Flash Player, QuickTime and Microsoft Office.

What Can I Do with a Degree in Biology?

Bachelor's degrees are the most prevalent of the three degree programs. At this level, you'll qualify for jobs in applied research, product development and high school teaching. You can also use your degree to apply to medical, dental or veterinary school. Master's degrees prepare you for jobs in product management and inspection, applied research and teaching. You can also further your research studies at the doctoral level. Finally, careers at the doctoral level include independent research, temporary postdoctoral research, administration and postsecondary teaching.
