What Is a Certified Nurse Midwifery (CNM) Program?

CNM programs are master's degree programs that focus on women's health needs, including all aspects of serving women as they progress from the stages of pregnancy to childbirth. Nurse midwifery is a concentration in 2-3 year Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) programs, which are offered at schools of nursing at 4-year colleges and universities throughout the U.S. Courses are typically taught by nursing professionals who hold either MSN degrees or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degrees. Most programs are designed to meet the degree requirements necessary to become a CNM through the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB).

Credit hours required for a post-master's certificate program can range from 12-45 and will vary depending on your school and background. How Do I Become a CNM?

RN licensure and a master's degree in nursing will qualify you to take the CNM examination through the AMCB. Your master's degree program must have included training in nurse midwifery. Additionally, you need to take the exam within 24 months of receiving your master's degree. You must also re-certify every five years.

Where Can I Work as a Certified Nurse Midwife?

You'll be able to work in a wide-range of settings, such as birthing centers, hospitals, community health clinics and community non-profit organizations geared towards women's health needs. In your profession, your patients will be women who are planning families, creating birth plans or nursing their newborns.
