Students interested in a career in dental hygiene must complete an associate's degree program in the field. At least three public schools, all of which are two-year colleges, in New Jersey offer such programs. An associate's degree in dental hygiene takes about two years to earn and is open to high school graduates or individuals holding a GED. Situated in a large suburban area in northern New Jersey, this school's accredited program emphasizes the hands-on approach. Your learning environments include clinics, laboratories and classrooms. Course topics include dental radiology, oral pathology and periodontology. Classes meet 5 days a week; be aware that some have an online component.

Your clinical practice will take place in the clinic at the college and at other clinical practice sites in the area. By the time of graduation, you'll know how to remove tooth deposits, screen for oral cancer and perform x-rays. You'll be able to take your national and regional examinations during your final semester and then take your state exam after graduation.
