East Carolina University

The Department of Engineering evaluates students separately for admittance to the engineering school and incoming freshmen typically score above 1100 on mathematics and critical reading on their SATs. With a student/teacher ratio of 18:1, the engineering program at ECU focuses on hands-on project applications and promotes team-based approaches. Students are encouraged to pursue PE licenses and you'll be required to take the first of the PE exam, the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam, senior year. Doctoral Degree Program in Engineering

Duke University, Pratt School of Engineering

At Duke, PhD students complete a set amount of coursework and then take the Qualifying Exam, comprised of questions based on completed coursework. Following this, they must produce a written research proposal and successfully defend it orally before a PhD committee. At this point, PhD students become PhD candidates and begin or continue research to produce a thesis. Duke also requires participation in their Graduate Colloquia, which involves attending seminars and workshops and completing two semesters of teaching assistantship. Once a candidate's research and thesis are complete, they go back before the PhD committee for a final oral examination (defense) of the thesis.

NCSU granted their first doctoral degree in 1926. The doctoral program requires you to take 72 credit hours past the baccalaureate degree and to pass a qualifying review and preliminary written and oral exams before being admitted as a candidate to the PhD program. NCSU requires doctoral students to take coursework outside of their major track as they feel that a broad based education is beneficial for their students, and they emphasize original research for earning a PhD degree. Candidates must also pass a final oral examination defending the conclusions reached and reported in their theses.
