What You Need to Know

These universities offer a variety of graduate courses through their respective OpenCourseWare projects. Courses are available in subjects such as architecture, medicine, and engineering. Students will only need an internet connection and a mobile device, laptop or home computer.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has one of the largest libraries of OpenCourseWare (OCW) available, with free lecture notes, slides, assignments and supplemental materials. Most of the courses - which are divided into undergraduate and graduate level - are available for download in a single Zip file. You can take one course from a variety of subjects or work your way through each of the classes in a single discipline.

MIT offers a multitude of categories of courses, including architecture, chemical engineering, political science and urban studies and planning. Each non-credit course has a combination of required reading, assignments, projects and exams - though most classes don't include all of these features. On the MIT website, the list of graduate courses in each category has icons indicating which features are available in the course materials.

What Materials Will I Need?

Each course has individual material requirements, but for most classes you will need to be able to view Portable Document Format (PDF) files and Microsoft Word documents to access lecture notes, assignments and exams. Mandatory textbooks are listed in each course syllabus, and many classes have free supplemental materials provided. Depending on the class, you may need to be able to access audio and video files.

Tufts University

Tufts University offers OCW graduate courses in a wide range of subjects, combining lecture notes with slides, exams, quizzes and required reading materials. The level of each course is included on the course home page.

What Subjects Are Available?

The courses are organized by school, including arts and sciences, nutrition science and policy, medicine, dental medicine, veterinary medicine and engineering. Each of the school categories offers a course list, allowing you to quickly navigate to your topics of interest. You can also view the recommended website resources listed in the Open Education Resources (OER) section on the website.

What Assignments Will I Complete?

Many of the courses have quizzes and exams included in the syllabus, allowing you to self-test and check your answers. Projects are included in many classes. Each course has an individual list of assignment and project requirements.

What Materials Will I Need?

You will need access to any required textbooks, which are listed on the course syllabus page of each class. Additional reading materials may be recommended, but not required to complete the course.
