Massachusetts Institute of Technology

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)'s chemistry of sports course is an undergraduate OpenCourseWare (OCW) class that was taught by two instructors in 2009. This free course gives you access to course materials, such as exams and lecture notes, but academic credit is not granted.

Also an OCW course, MIT's weight training class is based on a for-credit, 6-week course for undergraduate students. You may study all of the course's contents for free, but you will not interact with instructors or other students.

What Will I Learn?

The online chemistry of sports class seeks to improve your physical conditioning by suggesting exercises to incorporate into your fitness routine. You will study the chemistry of human biological systems as they function in three sports - running, swimming and cycling.

The online weight training course covers the correct techniques to use to develop muscles in the upper and lower body. You will also learn which exercises to use to develop specific muscles.

What Assignments Will I Complete?

The chemistry of sports course encourages students to experience how their biological systems function by participating in a mini-triathlon. You could also complete fitness testing, training schedule, and training journal activities.

What Materials Are Provided?

Chemistry of sports includes lecture notes on training, injury prevention and energy metabolism. The course also provides links to magazines, journals, textbooks and websites on the chemistry of sports, triathlons and related topics.

As part of the free weight training course, you can view lecture notes that consist of programs and instructions for exercising legs, chest, back, shoulders and arms. The course provides videos that demonstrate techniques for performing weight training exercises such as squats, deadlifts and lunges. You can also view textbooks and other resources on sports physiology, training, nutrition and weight training.
