Where Can I Find Free Online Math Courses?

Free math courses are offered online from universities such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Open University. Course topics include geometry, calculus, and statistics. Schools offering Mathematics degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What You Need to Know

You can improve your math skills with a variety of free online courses offered by accredited colleges and universities. Most of these noncredit courses include ample opportunities to apply what you've learned by means of quizzes, exams and optional problem sets.

Open University

An introductory geometry course is offered by the Open University, the United Kingdom's largest educational institution. The course is available for free through the school's OpenLearn website, which you may access any time you wish without registering.

What Will I Learn?

After completing this course, you'll understand geometric concepts, terms and formulas. You'll learn to calculate the areas and volume of geometric shapes, such as triangles, circles, boxes, cubes and cylinders. Unknown angles and rotational symmetries are among other topics covered.

What Assignments Will I Complete?

This course provides quizzes with several questions and each with a summary of the results. You could measure the lengths and angles of rectangles, squares and parallelograms, as well as create pie charts and build shapes with diagonals. Correct answers are provided. Some assignments can be completed using the interactive geometry application provided.

What Materials Are Included?

There are instructions for using the interactive application that can create, change and measure geometric shapes. This course also includes formulas for solving geometry problems, drawings of geometric shapes, and an illustration of a protractor along with instructions for use.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Calculus of several variables, and statistics for applications are OpenCourseWare (OCW) courses offered by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Originally delivered to undergraduates on campus, course materials are now available to you for free online for each course.

What Will I Learn?

Course materials focus on multi-variable calculus and topics normally studied in intermediate-level calculus courses. You'll study space motions, partial differentiation, exact differentials, Green's theorem, matrices and optimization techniques. Linear algebra and vector fields are among other topics covered. With the statistics for applications course, a broad coverage of statistics is administered while focusing on statistical methods commonly used in industry and scientific research, such as regression and classification, estimation theory and hypothesis testing. Other topics studied include analysis of variance and chi-square tests.

What Assignments Will I Complete?

The calculus course assigns 12 problem sets with solutions. There are also three practice exams and three regular exams, all with solutions. The statistics course has ten problem sets without solutions. You aren't required to complete assignments because instructors won't review and grade your work.

What Materials Are Provided?

You can study lecture notes on curves, integrals and functions, among other topics. You can buy the calculus course textbook through a link on a course Web page. Lecture notes are also available on topics such as multivariate normal distribution, maximum likelihood estimators, confidence intervals and independence testing. You can access notes for each presentation individually or download a single document that includes all notes.
