What Careers Exist in Gynecology?

If you are interested in this field, you can become a gynecologist, or a doctor that assists women with health issues. If you already have a nursing degree and are interested in gynecology, you can pursue graduate studies in women's health and midwifery before becoming a women's health practitioner or a nurse-midwife.

What Will I Study To Be A Gynecologist?

Gynecologists must first obtain an undergraduate degree, usually in science or pre-medicine, then go on to obtain a medical degree. When studying for a medical degree, expect to take courses in body systems, anatomy and medical procedures. In your third or fourth year as a medical student, you may have the opportunity to complete a clerkship (sometimes known as a rotation) in the gynecology or obstetrics department. Upon graduation, you must also complete a residency program, where you will have the opportunity to focus on gynecology. As you build a career, you can focus on a specific area of gynecology, such as gynecologic oncology, gynecologic surgery and urogynecology.

How Can I Become a Nurse-Midwife?

If you have already completed an undergraduate program in nursing and earned licensure as a registered nurse (RN), you can pursue a graduate degree in nurse-midwifery. As a student in a nurse-midwife program, you will take courses in advanced nursing practice and learn the skills to take care of patients before, during and after childbirth. Upon completion of the program, you will be eligible for certification by a professional organization and by your state licensing board.

How Can I Become a Nurse Practitioner?

You can also obtain a master's degree in women's health in order to become a nurse practitioner specializing in women's health. Nurse practitioners focus on clinical care as well as patient education. Depending on the state, nurse practitioners have varying levels of responsibility and might operate independent of a physician. You can find programs both online and on-campus. Expect to take a combination of theory courses as well as clinical courses. Upon completion of the program, you will be able to gain certification and licensure as a nurse practitioner.
