Herbology Certificates and Degrees

There are several degree and certificate program options in the study of herbology, traditional medicinal styles from plant-derived sources, so read on to learn about them. See career information about professional certification. Schools offering Allied Health degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What Are Herbology Degrees and Certificates?

Degree programs focusing only on herbology are scarce. Herbology is often taught as a component within other degree programs focusing on health practices. Baccalaureate-level degree programs are rare, while graduate programs are more common. You could earn a Master of Science (M.S.) in Oriental Medicine, an M.S. in Therapeutic Herbalism or a Master of Arts in Holistic Health Studies degree program. M.S. programs typically include a clinical internship component and practicum requirement. Finishing the program generally qualifies you to test for certification through the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM).

Professional Chinese herbology certificate programs, requiring applicants to be licensed acupuncturists, are also easier to find than undergraduate programs. Healthcare professionals other than acupuncturists might enroll in a similar postgraduate medical herbalist certificate program. This type of education is aimed to provide you with additional skills to incorporate into your professional practice. It can also qualify you to sit for certification through the NCCAOM.

What Classes Will I Take?

Herbology programs can train you to identify hundreds of herbs and to prepare them through various methods. You'll learn to utilize herbs for both treating chronic ailments and maintaining a healthy system. Along with time spent identifying and growing herbs, general science classes might be included as part of herbology-related programs. Examples of courses you might take during your herbal studies are:

  • Herb pharmacology
  • Herb phytochemistry
  • Clinical herbal practice
  • Chinese herb preparation
  • Chinese medicine herbal formulas
  • Herb toxicity
  • Herb dispensing

Are There Online Programs?

You will be hard-pressed to find an accredited online herbology program since so many degree programs involving herbology schooling revolve around patient interaction or herb identification, both of which mandate hands-on experience or observation. Some programs may offer an online component, but virtually all of the programs are taught on campus.

How Do I Get Certified?

After completing a program approved by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM) covering herbology, you must test through the NCCAOM in order to officially title yourself a Diplomate of Chinese Herbology and establish your professional qualifications. The ACAOM is the only accrediting body for this discipline that is legitimized by the United States Department of Education. The majority of states require that your education and certification come through these agencies.
