What Will I Learn in an Online Master's Degree Program in Holistic Wellness?

A very limited number of colleges and universities allow you to earn a master's degree in holistic wellness online. Some colleges offer hybrid programs that combine online classes with on-campus studies and assignments. Other degree programs are designed for nurses or other health professionals who are ready to learn about a completely holistic approach to treating the body. Some of the specific degree programs schools offer include a Master of Arts in Health Arts and Sciences or a Master of Arts in Health Education with a focus on holistic remedies. You will likely need to have a baccalaureate degree or undergraduate credits in anatomy, behavioral science or health science to apply.

As part of your studies, you will learn how to take care of the entire body, which includes the mind and spirit, through preventive measures. You may also learn about different types of Eastern and Western medicine and how those concepts can be applied to holistic wellness and traditional health care delivery. By the end of your program, you are likely to have a deep understanding of the role of holistic wellness in addressing disease and how different holistic methods can be used to balance the mind, body and spirit.

You can also become a holistic nurse, providing care such as aromatherapy or massage therapy, or a nutritionist focusing on holistic approaches. In order to become a naturopathic physician, you will need to complete further training.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) doesn't offer data specifically related to holistic practitioners. It did report, however, that registered nurses earned a median annual salary of $66,640 in May 2014 (www.bls.gov). In that same year, the BLS found that nutritionists earned a median annual salary of $56,950 and massage therapists earned $37,180.
