How Can I Help People As a Life Coach?

As a life coach, you'd work with business professionals, church members or individual clients. With a background in motivation and psychology, you can help clients realize their goals, take on difficult tasks and make choices in their lives.

If you're suited to a career as a life coach, you're probably a good listener, organized, enthusiastic and have a desire to help people. You may work as an independent life coach or use your coaching skills in a supervisory position.

What Programs Are Available To Me?

Undergraduate and graduate certificate programs in life coaching, leadership and human capital management, professional coaching and growth coaching consist entirely of life coaching courses and don't include general education courses. In some cases, certificate classes count as electives in a master's degree program.

If you're interested in a broader education, some master's degree programs in psychology or counseling may offer a life coaching specialization. A master's degree program in applied positive psychology or spiritual psychology may help to widen your career choices in general counseling, while providing coursework in life coaching.

You can choose from distance education options. Although some programs may be available completely online, many are hybrid programs which combine on-campus and online courses. Some programs conclude with a clinical internship; therefore, you may not be able to complete the entire program through distance learning. However, you may be able to complete supervised training at an approved local facility.

What Will I Be Taught?

You'll learn to identify life obstacles along with the means to combat them, including self reflection and creative outlets. In class, you may role play coaching scenarios with other students under the supervision of a professional life coach.
