How Do Online Programs Work?

Most online master's degree programs in sports coaching allow you to access your assignments at any time. Courses are similar to what you'd take on campus and are often taught by the same faculty. Instead of face-to-face contact, you'll interact with your instructors through e-mail or a course delivery system, such as Blackboard or Angel.

You may have to complete classes or assignments by a designated date. Although your courses may be completed online, you may be required to participate in a coaching clinic or workshop, as well as complete a research paper on coaching-related topics.

Are There Any Prerequisites?

Online master's degrees in sports coaching are offered at several accredited colleges and universities. If you're pursuing a master's program in sports coaching, you must have a bachelor's degree in physical education, education, biology or a related major. Other master's degrees related to sports coaching also require a bachelor's degree for enrollment, but not necessarily in a specified major.

You'll need to provide a copy of your GRE, GMAT or MAT scores, a copy of your college transcripts and letters of recommendation. You may also be required to provide a written statement regarding your personal plans and career goals. In some cases, you must maintain a grade point average of at least 2.75 and have at least five years of coaching experience in an approved facility at the completion of the program.

What Can I Do With My Degree?

A master's degree in sports coaching prepares you for a coaching career in various athletic settings, including amateur and professional sports, school sports and individual competition. You'll work with athletes, teaching them form and exercise techniques and guiding them to reach their potential. Depending on the program, you may be able to become a Certified Master Athletic Administrator or a Certified Athletic Administrator by obtaining certification from the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the job outlook for coaches and scouts is projected to increase by 6% from 2014 to 2024 (www.bls.gov). This average increase in employment is due to increased high school and college sport participation.
