What Will I Study?

In an M.Div. program, you'll spend plenty of time on Biblical studies and ministry techniques. Some colleges prefer if you understand the Bible in its original languages, and they teach you to read it in Hebrew and Greek. Some of the Christian sects expect you to pass a test in Greek and Hebrew, so learning these languages will prepare you for your ministry career.

You'll perform in-depth studies of each book of the Bible, and you'll explore the history of your sect or denomination. You may study topics such as pulpit ministry, worship, world religions, Judaism, prayer, prophecies, ministering children, confession, and sacraments.

You're also expected to complete an internship at an approved church or ministry. You'll learn about the various agencies within a church as well as exploring congregational life.

Can I Earn the Degree Online?

The M.Div. program is available both online and on campus. Many universities provide online education for those who do not live near the college and for those who are working in ministry and can't relocate. However, some of the online colleges offer their programs in hybrid format, requiring at least some attendance on campus. For example, an online program may require intensive on-campus residencies. This option allows the flexibility to work while only needing a few weeks on campus. Some individual hybrid courses include online and on-campus work. For instance, you may only meet on campus once a month or twice a semester.

You'll also have the opportunity of joining a cohort, where you'll attend residencies with the same students and follow the program track with exactly the same schedule as all the other students. Through online study, you'll be given a number of readings and research topics. You'll attend video lectures and interact with students on discussion threads.
