Grants Offered to Techy Pennsylvanians

Are you:

  • a legal resident of Pennsylvania
  • currently enrolled in college in Pennsylvania
  • studying science, technology or allied health
  • keeping a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • planning to stay and work in Pennsylvania after you graduate

If you said yes to all of those questions, then you may be eligible for a grant from the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency. PHEAA is a student aid organization that guarantees and services loans, processes financial aid and, for a lucky few, offers small scholarships to promote science and technology education.

The goal of the New Economy Technology Scholarship (NETS) Program is to educate and retain a workforce of highly trained science and technology professionals in the state of Pennsylvania. Working in concert with the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) and the Pennsylvania Workforce Investment Board (PAWIB), PHEAA hopes to attract new employers by developing a talented workforce, creating a 'NETS' gain for the economy.

Two awards are granted through the NETS Program: The technology scholarship and the SciTech scholarship.

Technology Scholarship

Applicants to the technology scholarship should be currently enrolled in a science or technology program in Pennsylvania. Qualifying programs must be at approved 2- or 4-year colleges or licensed technical institutes.

The scholarship is aimed primarily at students who are pursuing a professional or 2-year degree rather than a bachelor's degree, but still hope to 'succeed in a technology-based economy.'

Scholarship winners can receive up to $1,000 per year during their studies. The exact award depends on total educational costs, including tuition, room and board, fees and a book allowance. Students can earn the award in consecutive years, but they must reapply.

The technology scholarship is also contingent on students beginning employment in the state of Pennsylvania within a year of graduation. Graduates must continue to work in the state for one year for each year that they received the scholarship. A deferment of the work obligation may be granted to students who choose to pursue a bachelor's degree within a year of graduation.

SciTech Scholarship

To qualify for the SciTech scholarship, students must be currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program in science, technology or allied health at an approved college or university in Pennsylvania. Applicants should have at least sophomore standing and plan to complete an approved internship or work experience in their fields prior to graduation.

The SciTech scholarship offers up to $3,000 per year toward education expenses for a maximum of three years. Some exceptions to the cap are made for students enrolled in 5-year degree programs.

Students who receive the SciTech scholarship must make the same work commitments as recipients of the technology scholarship: Find employment in the state of Pennsylvania within one year of graduation and stay for at least one year for each year that the student received the scholarship. Deferment of the work obligation is offered to students who begin graduate study within a year of graduation.

In addition to the requirements above, all applicants for NETS Program scholarships must complete the FAFSA and Pennsylvania State Grant application. The awards are not based on financial need, but completing these applications facilitates the distribution of funds.
