What Does a Natural Health Bachelor's Degree Program Entail?
Training in this field is rarely offered at the bachelor's degree level. For the most part, you may find these programs offered as graduate degree education. Programs at the graduate level are commonly titled as naturopathic or alternative medicine.
Natural health, also known as alternative medicine, involves using herbs and natural methods to cure illnesses and treat injuries. These programs can also train you how natural medicine can help maintain good health. Courses in this field can provide training on how to work with patients and prescribe natural methods of health maintenance. By the end of your program, you may know the proper use of herbal medicine, aromatherapy or other forms of natural treatments that don't rely on drug companies or corporate hospitals.
What Courses Can I Expect?
Other than general education courses, you may need to complete courses covering nutritional fundamentals, anatomy, physiology, naturopathy, herbology, botany and organic chemistry. Your program may also offer additional classes in cellular biology, therapeutic massage, meditation, manual therapies, Ayurvedic medicine, acupuncture and detoxification.
Since programs at this level are rare and there is a reliance on hands-on training, you won't be able to find any schools offering distance education. During your education, you may develop skills using relaxation techniques, stress management techniques and traditional Chinese medicine. You may also learn Native American medicine, basic chiropractic methods, homeopathy and yoga. If you would like to advance your training, some programs offer additional hands-on education through internships.
What Can I Do With My Education?
With a bachelor's degree education, you may only qualify for some basic fitness and natural medicine careers. You may find that your education mostly serves as preparation to further your education. With additional education and specialized training, you may eventually be able to find a career as a chiropractor, physician, acupuncturist, naturopath or nurse.
