Online Bachelor's Degrees in Anatomy

A few schools offer undergraduate degree programs in anatomy; however, most anatomy programs are offered at the graduate level and not online. Learn about program options and courses. Schools offering Anatomy & Physiology degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What Type of Anatomy Degree Programs Are Available?

Unfortunately, you will not be able to find any online undergraduate degree programs in anatomy, as they simply don't exist. In fact, any kind of anatomy degree program is difficult to find at the undergraduate level. A small handful of schools offer Bachelor of Science in Anatomy programs, but their courses must be completed on a traditional campus. The vast majority of programs you'll find in anatomy are master's and doctoral degree programs and most of these programs are also campus-based.

Online Degrees Undergraduate degree programs not commonly available; specific coursework is offered
Common Courses Cell biology, embryology, gross anatomy, systemic anatomy, neurology
Other Requirements Thesis or teaching practicum may be required
Career Options Research scientist, emergency medical technician, physical therapist and a wide variety of health care professions

How Are These Programs Designed?

Most master's degree programs will allow you to choose a thesis or course option. In the former, you'll conduct research in a specific area of anatomy that you're interested in, write and present a thesis to obtain your degree. If you choose the course option, you'll design a course schedule that satisfies the academic goals of your degree program. In most course-based programs, you'll need to pass a final written and oral exam to complete your degree.

If you are interested in a doctoral degree program, you'll be required to choose a specialization, which will dictate the type of coursework you'll have. For example, some schools will offer concentrations like cell biology, developmental biology or neuroscience. Many schools will also require you to teach anatomy or biology courses as part of your coursework.

What Courses Will I Take?

Your curriculum may allow you to take elective courses in human genetics, advanced physiology and immunology. If you choose the course-based master's degree program, you'll find advanced courses that cover:

  • Biology of cells and tissues
  • Physiology
  • Microbiology
  • Gross anatomy
  • Neuroscience
  • Systemic anatomy

What Can I Do With My Degree?

If you are interested in continuing your research, a master's degree in anatomy will provide you with the background necessary to enter a doctoral program in anatomy and physiology or to further your training to become a health care professional. For example, professional certification programs for Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) and radiologists require a strong background in anatomy and biology. You may also find that a graduate degree in anatomy is useful as a second degree if you are already a certified health care professional.
