Online Certifications for Ultrasound Technicians

A certificate or associate's degree program in diagnostic medical sonography can prepare you to take the certification exams necessary to obtain ultrasound technician credentials. Read on to learn more about available training programs and your online options. See what the process is for earning professional certification, too. Schools offering Diagnostic Medical Sonography degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

Are Ultrasound Technician Certification Programs Offered Online?

The first step in becoming a certified ultrasound technician is enrolling in a diagnostic medical sonography training program. In many cases, completion of such programs will qualify you to take a credentialing examination leading to certification in both general sonography and specific ultrasound areas, such as cardiovascular or obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN).

Because ultrasound technicians perform medical imaging procedures on patients, extensive clinical laboratory studies and applied internships are a mandatory part of virtually all diagnostic medical sonography programs. Therefore, training programs are campus-based and aren't available online.

Online Program Availability Training programs are campus-based due to clinical skills practice required
Available Training Programs Certificates or associate's degrees
Course Requirements Health science concepts and diagnostic imaging skills
Certification Procedures American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS)

What Training Programs Are Available?

You can enroll in a certificate program or an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree program in diagnostic medical sonography. Most associate's degree and some certificate programs require the completion of prerequisite coursework before beginning your ultrasound technician training courses. These may include courses on anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, allied health foundations, physics and biology.

What Are the Course Requirements?

Regardless of structure, most programs teach the health science concepts and diagnostic imaging skills necessary to perform ultrasounds on various body parts. Lab courses train you to take sonographic measurements and identify any abnormalities in the examined areas. Parts of human anatomy you'll focus on include the abdomen, pelvis, breasts and cardiovascular system. Clinical practicums provide you with supervised experience. Concepts and skills taught in a diagnostic medical sonography program may include the following:

  • Ultrasound physics and instrumentation
  • Diagnostic imaging techniques
  • Obstetrics and gynecology
  • Pelvic and neonatal abnormalities
  • Abdominal sonography
  • Cardiovascular sonography
  • High resolution imaging
  • Clinical patient care
  • Pediatric sonography

How Do I Get Certified?

You can obtain voluntary ultrasound technician certification through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS), an independent professional association offering relevant credentials and continuing education (www.ardms.org). The ARDMS issues its Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) certification, which consists of general sonography certification and a specialty credential in your desired area of practice. The available specialty areas of sonographic certification are OB/GYN, breast, and abdomen.

In order to be eligible for certification, you must have completed at least a 2-year education program in allied health and an additional internship beyond those required by your degree program (www.ardms.org). If you meet these requirements, you can register to take your specialty and certification exams at an ARDMS testing center. Both parts of certification exams are in written, multiple choice format.
