Online Nursing Assistant Training Programs

A career as a nursing assistant can mean employment in a medical facility helping nurses care for patients. Read on to learn more about the available training programs, including online learning options. Get licensure information, too. Schools offering Nursing degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What Kind Of Nursing Assistant Training Is Available?

Many schools, particularly junior colleges, offer certified nursing assistant training programs that will provide you with all the necessary training for the job. These programs require only a few courses, and they can often be completed in just one or two academic terms. Some coursework may be offered online by some schools, but you'll still need to complete clinical rotations in person.

CNAs work in hospitals, long-term care facilities, psychiatric care centers and other settings, assisting nurses with patient care. They often help patients with daily care tasks, such as bathing, feeding, administering medications, toileting, changing bed linens and repositioning the bedridden. CNAs are tasked with transporting patients as needed. Nursing assistants also provide clerical support and maintain inventories, as well as keeping equipment clean, sterilized and maintained.

Program Levels Certificate program
Prerequisites Immunization records; CPR certification and background check; English proficiency; physical and mental fitness
Common Courses Patient care, specimen collection, dealing with death and dying, medical equipment, patient record keeping
Certification Information CMA certification is available; CNA certification must be maintained with continuing education courses

Are There Prerequisites?

You'll need to be able to read and write English clearly, be physically fit and be emotionally ready to deal with the ill or debilitated. You'll also need to show proof of immunizations, have CPR certification and submit to a background check. A criminal history (with no felonies) won't necessarily disqualify you from a CNA program, but you may have trouble finding employment.

What Topics Will I Study?

You'll be given a solid background in basic nursing care through coursework and practical experience. You'll learn both to perform patient care procedures and administrative tasks. You'll learn about how health care teams are organized at care facilities and about any legal considerations involved with CNA work. Some common course topics include:

  • Taking vital signs
  • Moving patients
  • Maintaining patient records
  • Administering medications
  • Feeding patients
  • Dressing wounds
  • Dealing with death and dying patients
  • Collecting specimens for testing
  • Bathing and grooming patients
  • Setting up and using medical equipment

What About Certifications and Licensure?

Most programs will prepare you to sit for your state's certification exam for nursing assistants. To keep your certification, you'll need to retest at regular intervals, which may vary from state to state. In addition, many states require continuing education courses to maintain certification. Certified Medication Assistant (CMA) certification is also available, but is not required to become a CNA.
