Can I Earn a Bachelor's Degree in Orthodontics?

Orthodontics programs aren't offered at the bachelor's degree level. In order to study orthodontics, you must first earn a bachelor's degree, then complete dental school with a residency, and finally enroll in a specialized post-doctorate master's degree program in orthodontics. For admission into dental school, your undergraduate curriculum must be heavy with credits in biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics.

Dental schools award Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degrees, though these programs and credentials are roughly identical. After earning the DDS or DMD, you'll continue on to complete your residency. It is after the residency that you'll have the option of pursuing a master's degree in a dental specialty like orthodontics.

If you're interested in a dental education but only wish to pursue a bachelor's degree, you can consider a bachelor's degree program in dental hygiene.

What Will I Learn in a Dental Hygiene Program?

Bachelor's degrees in dental hygiene can be treated as first degrees for those looking to enter the field, or they can enhance the skills and resumes of those who have certificates and associate's degrees and are already working as dental hygienists. If you've never been licensed, you'll need to look for an entry-level bachelor's degree program, since some programs only admit those who've completed an associate's degree program accredited by the American Dental Association (ADA) and earned a license.

An entry-level bachelor's degree program trains you to promote healthy oral practices, prevent oral diseases and treat current diseases. You'll explore dental anatomy, pediatric dentistry, and dental pharmacology. You'll also study research methodologies and teaching techniques, if you're interested in teaching dental hygiene. Non-entry-level programs expand upon the basics of dental hygiene learned in an associate's degree program and emphasize the administrative skills needed for leadership in a dental environment.

What Will I Learn in an Orthodontics Program?

An advanced orthodontics master's degree program provides hands-on opportunities with patients. You'll work with patients in a clinical setting on a case-by-case basis. You'll spend time working in dental surgery and with patients who have skeletal and craniofacial problems. You'll learn how to run an orthodontics clinic, how to gain patients, and how to manage employees.

Through seminars and residencies, you'll learn contemporary orthodontic practices and problem solving procedures for orthodontic injuries and problems. You'll also spend time researching causes of and cures for orthodontic diseases and deformities. Upon completion of an advanced master's degree program, you should be able to complete the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) examinations for certification.

Can I Earn Either Degree Online?

The master's degree in orthodontics is essentially impossible to earn online, due to the intense hands-on training required. However, non-entry-level bachelor's degree programs in dental hygiene are offered via the Internet from a number of participating colleges. Many of the online programs are degree completion programs that allow you to complete your bachelor's degree online if you have an associate's degree and licensure (therefore having met all clinical competencies). These programs use Blackboard or other webinar platforms to provide lectures and coursework. You'll also use real-time chat room discussions and lectures to interact with the professor and other students.
