What You Need to Know

Students interested in paramedic training programs in Massachusetts may elect to earn a certificate, associate's, or bachelor's degree as a paramedic. Certificate programs may be earned in 12-18 months, associate's degrees generally require enrollment of about two years for full-time students, and a bachelor's degree may be conferred after four years of study. Because all paramedic training programs include an element of clinical work or internship, admission requirements may include a background check, drug screening, immunization records, and/or liability insurance. Most paramedic programs in Massachusetts are offered by two-year, public schools, but there is at least one four-year, private institution that offers a program as well.

Certificate Programs for Paramedics in Massachusetts

MassBay Community College

Offered through its Division of Health Sciences, MassBay Community College offers a 32-credit program leading to a Certificate in Paramedicine. The program is available in day and evening sessions. After a year of didactic, laboratory and practical clinical instruction, the program culminates in a summer field internship. Courses such as anatomy and physiology, neonatal and pediatric advanced life support, medical emergencies, cardiology and pharmacology are covered. Completion of this program, which is accredited by the Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS), can qualify you sit for the Massachusetts paramedic certification examination.

Your two final courses are clinical placement and field placement. Using a preceptor approach, clinical placement gives you a chance to experience rotations in several clinical hospital settings. Field placement focuses on real-life pre-hospital settings and also uses a preceptor approach. Before you can participate in field placement, you must become certified in advanced cardiac life support (ACLS).

Upon completion of the program, you may be able to sit for the Massachusetts and the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) certification examinations for paramedics.

Bachelor's Degree Program for Paramedics in Massachusetts

Springfield College

Through its School of Health Sciences and Rehabilitative Studies, you can pursue a bachelor's degree and take courses that lead to certification as an EMT at the basic, intermediate and paramedic levels, depending on your level of experience upon entry. A number of local ambulance services offer per-diem employment for qualified students. In addition to EMS training at all levels, the program includes courses in search and rescue management, business, accounting, emergency vehicle and facility design, human resources management and psychology. You're also required to complete a senior project and serve internships as a paramedic and as an EMS management trainee.
