In order to work as a licensed physical therapist, you must earn a doctorate in the field. In Pennsylvania, there are at least four schools that offer doctorate programs in physical therapy. All are four-year institutions and most of the schools are public. It takes three years to complete a doctoral degree program in physical therapy, and your coursework includes both lecture-based classroom sessions and extensive clinical experiences. Admission requirements include a bachelor's degree with specific prerequisite coursework, GRE scores, letters of recommendation and/or experience working with a physical therapist.

Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Degree Programs in PA

Neumann University

Courses in Neumann University's DPT program are offered on weekends, allowing you to work while you pursue your degree. You need to complete 94 credit hours to complete this program, including courses on human development, neuromuscular pathophysiology, orthotics and diagnostic imaging. A total of three clinical experiences are required, each lasting nine or ten weeks. You gain practical knowledge working in acute inpatient, post-acute rehabilitation and outpatient settings.

The Department of Physical Therapy at Slippery Rock University administers a DPT program and admits new students during the fall semester. During this program, you participate in four clinical training experiences and encounter classes that include psychosocial integration, nutrition, gross anatomy and movement science. The first clinical experience is just two weeks and takes place in the summer, while the second one lasts five weeks at the start of the second year. The final two internships are 15 weeks long and occur in the third year. If you haven't obtained a bachelor's degree yet, you could pursue an option that allows you to complete three years of undergraduate and three years of graduate work to earn both degrees consecutively.

As you study, you have access to the university's clinical simulation lab, cadaver dissection lab and medical library. Additionally, this program offers periodic breaks longer than ten days that allow you rest. The college also offers a research-oriented Doctor of Philosophy in Movement Science and a 6-year undergraduate/DPT program.

During your final year in the program, you participate in a year-long clinical internship at a hospital or therapy clinic.
