What is a Product Design Engineering Program?
Product design engineering focuses on the creation and manufacturing of a new product or system. You can typically study this discipline through design, manufacturing or industrial engineering programs. You may also find that instead of being its own program, product design is an emphasis or interdisciplinary degree with additional classes in art, science and/or technology.
Programs in product design primarily focus on the design process, as well as methods for solving problems and basic manufacturing processes. Your studies may also include group projects to simulate the work environment and visual design or business strategy courses.

What Levels of Study Are Available?
You can find degree programs at the bachelor's and master's levels, through programs like the Bachelor of Science in Product Design or Master of Science in Engineering Design and Innovation. You can also find certificate programs in design and manufacturing, product design and engineering design.
You may only need to complete prerequisite work for admission to a bachelor's degree or certificate program, while master's degree programs generally require that you have a bachelor's degree in engineering or another technical field. Most programs are not available online because hands-on design and engineering work is encouraged.
What Can I Do With My Degree?
Working in product design, you will develop product solutions, which may include designing a new product, process or form of technology. This can also include taking into account any cultural, environmental, societal or aesthetic concerns that may be associated with the design.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicted that employment for industrial designers would see a two percent growth from 2014 to 2024 (www.bls.gov). The BLS noted that applicants with a background in computer-aided design would have a better chance of securing employment. You can pursue most entry-level positions in this field with a bachelor's degree.
