Social Services Administrators Defined

As a social services administrator, you oversee the process of helping people cope with everyday issues, such as relationships and family problems. Social workers work in a number of settings attempting to help people cope with issues, such as inadequate housing, unemployment, substance abuse or spousal abuse. You could design programs and put them into action to combat these personal issues. A social services administrator researches and analyzes policies, programs and regulations to determine the best method of action before implementing these measures. You could also work to raise funds or provide grants for such programs.

What Is My Employment Outlook?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment for social and community service managers - including social services administrators - was expected to grow 21% between 2012-2022 (www.bls.gov). This rate is faster than average, but will be especially faster for those who choose to specialize in aging populations or with those recovering from drug addictions. Additionally, the BLS reported that social services administrators earned an average income of $65,750 per year in 2013.

What Education Is Required?

Employees may find entry-level positions with degrees in psychology, sociology and social work. If you are seeking a position as a social service administrator, you should earn a master's degree in social work, which takes two years to complete. Such programs also require up to 900 hours of clinical training. You do not need an undergraduate degree in a related field for entrance; a comprehensive study of direct practice theory and techniques is incorporated into the curricula. Licensure as a social worker may or may not be required for administrator positions. States have varying licensure requirements for practicing social work, but most require a minimum of a Master in Social Work.
