Solutions Development Associate's Degree

'Solutions development' refers to an outdated credential from Microsoft, but you can find programs in computer software development that include course topics in solutions development. This article looks at the typical courses, such as data structures and server programming, that you can find in a related associate's degree program. It also looks at certifications you can pursue. Schools offering Industrial Technology Management degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

Are Solutions Development Associate's Degree Programs Available?

Solutions development academic programs are no longer available, and the Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer (MCSD) designation isn't offered anymore. Instead, you may pursue a computer software development associate's degree program.

Not only do computer software development programs cover solutions development, but they can teach you to create, develop, maintain and troubleshoot computer software. Your program may also build your familiarity with computer operating systems, programming, interfacing and data processing.

Degree FieldSoftware development
Common ClassesSoftware engineering, server programming, computer maintenance, systems analysis
Program FormatOnline or on campus
Certification OptionsMicrosoft, Oracle and CompTIA certifications are possible options for graduates

What Courses Can I Expect?

During your program, you can expect to complete core courses covering topics in systems analysis, data structure, network systems, Web programming, microcomputer maintenance, systems design and server programming. Your program may also train you to work with various types of computer programming code, software engineering tools and computer databases. Many programs may also require you to complete general education courses covering communications, English composition, natural sciences, mathematics, social sciences, humanities and fine arts.

Can I Complete My Program Online?

Although your online choices may be limited, you may be able to find schools offering software development programs including principles, concepts and introduction courses through distance education. You may find that an online program can also train you how to use computer programming language with Visual Basic, SQL, Java, C++ and Microsoft Visual Studio.

What Kind of Industry Certifications Can I Pursue?

With the retirement of the MCSD, the main designations for this field are the Microsoft Certified Professional Developer (MCPD) and Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) credentials. You may also be able to earn certifications through Oracle and CompTIA.

Both designations represent a proficiency with Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 or 2010. If you pursue the MCPD designation, you may also need to establish skills in development technologies, including .Net Framework. If you want to pursue the MCTS designation, you may need to demonstrate your skills in Microsoft SQL servers, operating systems and Exchange Server. The MCTS designation may also require you to be able to build, manage, debug and troubleshoot related technology.
