Student Saver Holiday Gift Guide: Gifts for That Special Someone
Buying a holiday gift for that special someone could sometimes be tricky. But there are plenty of ways for you to express how much you care about them with some of these helpful hints.
Holiday Gifts for Someone Special
With the holiday season fast approaching, you're scrambling to think up a gift that shows your significant other how you really feel. The problem is, you don't have very much money to spend. But sometimes it really is the thought that counts. With a little thinking and these handy ideas, you can still get that special someone a gift that will knock their socks off.
Significant others are notoriously hard to buy gifts for because everyone wants to get them something personal and extravagant that expresses how they really feel. But on a student budget that isn't exactly easy. However, you can still conjure up some gifts yourself out of craft supplies or find something meaningful for cheap. All it takes is knowing your special someone and knowing where to look.
It may sound like a second grade art project, but that's only because it's so easy. All you have to do is buy a blank picture frame and then decorate it using your significant other's favorite images, colors and styles. For boyfriends, you can even paste on pictures of favorite video game or movie characters. When you're finished, put a picture of you two together in the frame. The fact that it's handmade and thoughtful will give you major bonus points.
Home Cooked Meal
Nothing says 'I love you' like food. This one works for both men and women, since everybody enjoys good food. Plan out a special night where you will make your significant other dinner with all their favorite dishes. Light candles and make it a restaurant-like atmosphere. If you'd rather not make such a presentation of it, you can always just make a special desert like a batch of cookies with their initials pressed into the top.
In the winter, this is rather difficult to do, but it is still manageable. Go to a place nearby where you know flowers grow, and just pick a bundle. Put them in a nice glass vase with a bow, and give them to your girlfriend or boyfriend. Of course, this is a better gift for women, but you'd be surprised to find that men don't mind getting flowers now and again either. Add some chocolate to the mix if you're not sure it's right for your boyfriend and you'll probably be okay.
You may not be the artistic type but this is always a classic gift. Just sit down and write a poem about how you feel or what you think about when you see your significant other. Use a nice pen and when you're done you can roll it up like a scroll and tie it with a bit of ribbon. Even if the poem doesn't rhyme or isn't very good, the thought behind it will still be quite touching. Again, this seems like more of a gift for women, but if your guy is the artistic type this will still hit home. If you want to be really creative, writing a short story is also a thoughtful present.
Go out to a local craft store and pick up a plain white mug. Using paint and whatever other supplies you can think of, decorate the mug to fit the personality of your boyfriend or girlfriend. If you're not quite sure what to decorate it with, you can always write a note to them on the mug or a slogan or favorite quote of theirs. This is a good gender-neutral gift because in the middle of winter, hot beverages seem to be everywhere and it's nice to have a personalized mug.
This takes some work, but it's not difficult work. Go out to a local hiking trail and look for a tall, solid stick. Take it home and use a knife to carve away any imperfections or bark. From there, you can decorate the stick in any way you see fit. Writing their name along the wood is always a good touch. You can get as fancy or as simple as you want and even if your significant other is not much of a walker, they will appreciate the work put into it. Who knows, it might inspire them to go out and get more exercise.
Never underestimate the power of a laugh. Think about your significant other's favorite inside jokes or silly quotes. Consider what objects relate to a funny story in your history. Then get creative with it. Either make something or get something that you know will make them laugh and wrap it in an over-sized box. Showing you know them that well and making them smile can be a more extravagant and valuable gift than anything that money can buy.
