What Are Three Top Anesthesiology Schools?

Duke University in Durham, NC

Duke tied for eighth place in the U.S. News & World Report rankings for medical research and third in nurse anesthesia programs in 2016. Duke's School of Anesthesiology celebrates its 45th year in 2016.

As a medical student at Duke, you'll complete an anesthesiology rotation during your second year of med school, learning anesthesiology fundamentals and participating in preoperative through postoperative care. If you plan to specialize in anesthesiology, you'll conduct a related research project during your third year or complete a longer rotation during your fourth year. A dual Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) is available in biomedical research areas for physician-scientists. The Duke University School of Nursing offers a program that can lead to Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) eligibility. Duke's CRNAs and anesthesiologists collaborate in an anesthesia care team model.

The school's anesthesiology department serves over 32,000 surgical cases annually. Its Global Perioperative Research Organization and Simulation Center offer advanced research and training opportunities in anesthesiology. Available degrees include:

  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)
  • M.D.
  • Medical Scientist Training Program (M.D./Ph.D.)
