What Can I Do with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Radiology?

Hospitals and other employers need workers proficient in radiology to operate and maintain technical radiographic machines. Many different employment opportunities are available for radiology technicians, especially those with specializations. Radiologic technologist, pediatric radiographer and cardiovascular radiologic technician are potential careers available to students with a Bachelor of Science in Radiology. Schools offering Cardiovascular Sonography degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

Education and Certification Requirements

Bachelor's degree programs in radiology include courses in medical terminology, anatomy/physiology and radiation physics. Students learn to operate equipment, position patients and evaluate the images they procure. Clinical work gives them experience working with patients.

A few states require that radiologic technologists and radiographers be licensed. Licensing generally requires completing an accredited training program and passing a state exam or the exam from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Many graduates attain professional certification even if their state does not require licensing. Occupations in this field can include:

Radiologic Technologist

These professionals follow a physician's requests and operate X-ray machines to take radiographs of a patient's body. They also explain how the X-ray is taken and prepare the subject for the procedure. Safety is the top priority for radiologic technologists because of the radiation involved with the procedure; workers must ensure that all instruments and safety devices are working correctly.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), jobs in this occupation are expected to increase by 21% from 2012-22. Radiologic technologists may find work in medical and diagnostic laboratories, hospitals and physician offices.

Pediatric Radiographer

Degree holders interested in helping children can become pediatric radiographers, performing many of the same duties as radiologic technologists. Experienced pediatric radiographers also perform fluoroscopies on patients, giving a liquid solution to patients to drink which allows for real-time images of the body to be taken.

The Society for Pediatric Radiology reports that many pediatric radiographer positions remain open yearly, making job prospects excellent for this career. Potential employers for pediatric radiographers include children's hospitals, hospitals and health clinics.

Cardiovascular Radiologic Technician

Students in a Bachelor of Science degree program in radiology may specialize in cardiovascular radiologic technology. These technicians use radiography to test and study a patient's heart to determine the health and condition of the organ. Electrocardiograms are also used, since doctors need a 3-D image of the patient's heart. Administrative duties, such as chart filing, scheduling and updating files, also come with this position.

Cardiovascular radiologic technicians may choose to specialize in echocardiography, vascular technology or invasive cardiology. Potential employers that hire cardiovascular radiologic technicians include private health practices, diagnostic imaging centers and hospitals cardiology departments.
