The Massachusetts School of Barbering in Quincy was founded in 1940, and it offers you two barbering programs. If you've already completed a cosmetology program, you qualify for the 500-hour cosmetology crossover program, which trains cosmetologists in men's hair care, including shaving and beard trimming. The 1,000-hour barber styling program trains you in cutting, styling, beard trimming, shaving, light therapy and shop management, and it is offered in full-time, part-time, day and evening formats.

Career Information for Barbers in MA

Barbers provide hair care to mostly men, including cutting, trimming, shampooing and shaving. In order to become a barber, you must complete a specialized barbering program. The Massachusetts barber licensing exams are offered several times each month, according to the state's Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation. After you finish your barber program, your school will give you an application to be considered as a licensed apprentice. Once you work as an apprentice for at least 18 months, you can apply for your master barber license.

Nationally, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projected that the employment of barbers was expected to increase by 7% from 2010-2020. In May 2011, the 10,430 barbers in the U.S. averaged about $24,000. Barbers working in Massachusetts earned a mean annual salary of about $54,000.
