What Are Examples of School Certificate Programs?
School certificate programs can be found in several forms depending on the learner's needs. Read on to learn more about three of the most common forms of school certificate programs.
School Certificate Overview
A school certificate can be awarded in a number of fields of study and through several types of schools. Three of the most common certificate programs are: a secondary school completion program, a trade school program and a postgraduate studies program.
Secondary Education Completion
A school certificate known as an individual educational program (IEP) provides a high school completion certificate for some students, mainly those with disabilities. An IEP may be developed through a local, state or other jurisdiction to meet the specific educational goals of an individual. Content is varied to fit a particular student and may or may not be sufficient to match a standard study curriculum in a regular secondary school or high school.
Many trade and vocational careers require completion of a school certificate program for successful entrance into the field. A nursing aide job in many states requires completion of a certification program that can incorporate classroom training, instructor-supervised practice and a probationary period on the job. The field of cosmetology often requires completion of a school certificate program before state licensing is granted. Other typical certificate programs include data processing technician, heating and air conditioning technician, and child care provider. These school certificate programs are most commonly offered at trade schools and community colleges.
Postgraduate school certificate programs are usually aimed at providing students with a specialized credential in a particular field. These certificates are not as comprehensive as master's degree programs, but they do document proficiency in a specific area. A student may complete school certificate programs in preparation for a more thorough postgraduate diploma. Postgraduate certificate programs may be used to enhance a formal master's or doctoral degree. An example of a postgraduate certificate program is a post-master's degree certificate in nursing education.
