Salary Information

The BLS reported that, in this category, nutritionists who had received specialized training and advanced degrees could expect better opportunities. In 2014, the BLS also reported that the median annual salary for dietitians and nutritionists was $56,950.

Academic Options

Many schools have developed holistic nutrition programs. For most such jobs, a minimum of a bachelor's degree is required. However, some employers may require graduate degrees as well as certification or licensure. An undergraduate degree in nutrition or dietetics may be sufficient to work in the field, particularly when a program's curriculum includes holistic studies. Relevant master's- and doctoral-level degree programs may exist in several areas, including holistic health education, holistic nutrition, and health and nutrition education.

Licensure Options

Some states require holistic nutritionists to be certified, while others do not. The National Association of Nutrition Professionals (NANP) operates the Holistic Nutrition Credentialing Board (HNCB), which offers voluntary certification in the field. Holistic nutrition-program graduates who have accumulated at least 500 hours of professional experience may qualify to sit for the HNCB examination. The HNCB also maintains continuing education requirements for certification renewal.

Voluntary certification is also available through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND). The agency administers Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) and Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR) credentials.
