Yoga Instructor Job Description

Yoga instructors are often group exercise instructors who work at fitness centers, gyms or healthcare facilities. They may also be personal trainers who offer their expertise to individual clients. As either type of yoga instructor, you could teach students how to maintain the proper breathing techniques and postures.

Typically, yoga instructors specialize in a particular style of yoga, such as Vinyasa, Ashtanga and Bikram. You can also decide to teach age-appropriate yoga techniques and asanas to children or stress management and alignment techniques to pregnant women.

Most yoga instructors earned between $12.52 and $49.98 per hour, according to September 2015 figures on Payscale.com. Those with less than a year of experience earned $10.00 to $20.75 per hour, while those with 5-9 years of experience earned between $14.76 and $49.66 hourly. Also, the top-paying states were California, Florida and Washington.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), job opportunities for fitness trainers and aerobic instructors, including yoga instructors, were expected to grow 13% from 2012-2022. Yoga instructors' services will be sought out by a growing population of older clients who want less strenuous forms of exercise.

Education Credentials

You will need experience taking yoga to become an instructor, according to the BLS. If you're a student, some teachers may allow you to assist their sessions. You may also enroll in training programs at yoga studios, yoga schools or healthcare centers.

The Yoga Alliance offers 200-hour and 500-hour yoga teacher training programs that include topics in proper technique, instructional methods, philosophy and anatomy. A teaching practicum is also required. If you complete these training requirements, you can become a Registered Yoga Teacher. You will also need to complete additional training every three years to meet continuing education requirements. The Yoga Alliance also maintains training standards for children's and prenatal yoga.
