What You Need to Know

In Ohio, you can train to become a CNA at a 2-year or less-than-2-year, public school. Nursing assistant programs require a month of study time, which often translates into 80 to 92 hours of training. Your curriculum will be divided between classroom sessions, where you learn theoretical topics, and clinical hours where you put your training into practice. Once you complete the training, you'll be ready to take the certification exam.

Apollo Career Center

The nurse aid course, offered several times a year at Apollo Career Center, prepares you to take the state nurse aide competency test. Some of the topics you study include patient rights, personal care/grooming, emergency and safety practices and basic nursing skills. In addition to classroom studies, you'll complete 16 clinical hours at an approved medical facility.

Cincinnati State Technical and Community College

Cincinnati State Technical and Community College offers a nurse aide training program through its Health and Public Safety Division. The program prepares you to take the nurse aide competency exam and seek work as a CNA. Nursing aide skills you'll learn include taking vital signs, making beds, feeding and grooming residents, monitoring respiration and pulse and safely transferring patients from bed to wheelchair. The program also provides you with hands-on training through its simulated classroom.

Delaware Area Career Center offers a nurse aide training program you can attend at night and on Saturdays. The class consists of eight 4-hour sessions 1 night per week and 8 Saturday classes. You'll learn all aspects of the nurse aide career, including patient care, residents' rights and long-term care procedures while developing basic nursing skills. The curriculum for this program is based on the standards set by the state of Ohio. You'll also learn CPR in this class. Upon completion, you'll be ready to take the Ohio nurse aide competency exam.

Your curriculum consists of 56 hours in the classroom and 24 clinical hours at a local long-term care facility to provide you with hands-on training and patient contact. The nurse aide program is offered with day or evening classes.
