University of Texas at Austin

The Master of Arts in Advertising program at the University of Texas (UT) at Austin provides students with two options: a thesis and a non-thesis program. The thesis program, designed for students wishing to continue on to a Ph.D. program, requires 36 hours of coursework, as well as completion of a thesis. The non-thesis option requires 39 hours of coursework. Both programs take about two years to complete.

Once students are admitted, they must maintain a 3.0 grade point average. Students applying to the advertising graduate degree program without a background in advertising are required to take core classes in marketing and statistics before beginning the program. However, these prerequisites do not need to be completed before applying.

Boston University

Boston University (BU) offers a part-time Master of Science in Advertising through its College of Communication. This program is designed to offer students a convenient, hands-on education. Many classes are offered in the evenings. BU's M.S. degree covers interactive media, branding and creative development, advertising management, international marketing and mass communication.

The M.S. degree at BU requires 40 hours of coursework to complete. Three core courses must be completed, with the remainder of the degree being made up of advertising and management electives. The three core classes are:

The University of Florida (UF) offers a Master of Advertising in their College of Journalism and Communication. This is a research-based degree, which offers students the opportunity to work in specialized areas such as creative strategy, account management and media planning.

UF's program requires 33 graduate-level credit hours, as well as a thesis or a project. Six core classes are required, along with three elective courses. The remainder of the credit hours are taken up by thesis work. If students do not have previous educational or professional experience in the field, they are required to take introductory courses in advertising and marketing before beginning the program. UF's program also requires GRE scores of over 156 for the verbal and 146 for the quantitative portion of the exam.
