Where Can I Earn a Spanish Language Certificate Online?
Learning Spanish or improving your Spanish-speaking skills may help you obtain employment or advance in the corporate world. One way to prove you have that experience is to obtain a Spanish language certificate. Or, if you don't have the experience you need, a Spanish language certificate program may be a good way to learn. Schools offering Spanish degrees can also be found in these popular choices.
Online Spanish Language Certificate Program Overview
Spanish language certificate programs are designed to help non-Spanish speaking students learn the fluency they need to use Spanish, such as for business uses. Many schools, especially continuing education departments, offer these certificate programs online. Schools also offer related Spanish fluency certificates, such as Spanish/English translation, business Spanish and medical language Spanish.
The length of the program and the number of credits needed for each certificate varies by school. In general, these programs focus on Spanish vocabulary and grammar, making sure students can use the language both in conversation and in writing. Schools may offer Spanish immersion programs as well. Students with some knowledge of the language beforehand may be able to immediately enter a higher course level. Listed below are some schools that offer online Spanish certificates.
University of Wisconsin-Madison's Continuing Studies
The University of Wisconsin-Madison offers a certificate program in Spanish, which is designed for students who have had a previous introduction to Spanish. This certificate program focuses on business Spanish and the customs that professionals may come across during interactions with Spanish speaking business people. The certificate includes two courses. Spanish learners in the first will learn how to create business documents such as memorandums, formal letters and résumés, while students in the second course will learn customs forms and regulations, financial documentation and corporate structure for Spanish speaking companies.
San Diego State University College of Extended Studies
San Diego State University (SDSU) offers a special set of programs for students not enrolled in the university. Following an entrance exam and interview to verify both English and Spanish language abilities, the program for Spanish translation is offered through SDSU's Imperial Valley Campus. The program focuses on teaching bilingual students the theories and methods of two high-demand areas: translation and court interpretation. The program results in an Open University Certificate in Translation and Court Interpretation.
East Carolina University's Spanish Distance Education
An experimental program at East Carolina University (ECU) offers scheduled online Spanish classes, where students meet for class at the scheduled times and dates just like traditional classroom-based classes. Everything, from the textbook to the lectures, is hosted online with one exception: exams must be taken in the presence of a proctor or other trusted individual. The program is a pilot program, and the successful completion of classes does not currently result in a certificate; however, the classes are for-credit, college-level courses that may count toward the completion of a college degree at ECU or another school. ECU offers both a Spanish language and a Spanish translation certificate on-campus.
