What You Need to Know

To attain the highest level of training as an emergency medical technician (EMT), you must complete a paramedic certificate or associate degree program that has been approved by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Each takes approximately two years to complete and can prepare you to pass the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) licensing exam.

Phoenix College

As part of your admission process, you'll take a test of 150 questions taken from the EMT-Basic curriculum as proscribed by the Department of Transportation. The program was designed to prepare current EMTs for advancement to paramedic status. You'll meet three days a week for classes, and you'll have one Saturday class each month. This program did not have accreditation or review status as of July 2012.

The second and third blocks cover didactic studies, and the fourth block includes both clinical and vehicular training. Glendale Community College has applied for initial accreditation for its paramedic programs as of July 2012.
