Milwaukee Area Technical College provides more than 200 apprenticeship, certificate, diploma and associate degree programs. As a student of MATC, you can choose from a variety of academic programs, such as anesthesia technology, baking production, computer information technology, aviation technology, funeral science and surgical technology.

MATC's Student Employment Services assists enrolled students and graduates with job searching, applying for specific jobs, getting referrals for employment and formulating a plan for advancing in a career. Incoming students can start ahead of the game by applying CLEP or AP credit toward a MATC program. To help ease your experience, the school offers later class times and distance learning options, as well as a number of special student services, such as remedial, academic/career counseling and employment/placement services, as well as an on-campus day care if you need to drop off your kids before class. You should be aware that MATC's retention rate was around 50% in 2011, based on figures from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES); this means only half of full-time students returned for their second year. Similarly, the school's graduation rate falls well below Wisconsin's national average graduation rate for public two-year colleges (31.3%); according to NCES, only 13% of MATC students who started their studies in Fall 2008 graduated within 150% of 'normal time.' NCES also reported that the total cost to attend MATC (which can be lower depending on a student's living arrangements) was $15,356 in 2011, which was just over $5,000 more than the national average of $10,291 for 2-year, public institutions.

Getting In & Financial Aid at MATC

Like most community colleges, MATC has an open admissions policy. To apply, you must submit an application online or through the MATC Financial Aid Office. If you plan to work toward a degree, you also need to submit transcripts and take the Accuplacer test to determine readiness for college-level courses (this can be waived under certain circumstances). Once enrolled, you must complete a student orientation.

Life at MATC

While MATC doesn't offer on-campus housing, and most students commute, the school does have intramural sports teams in basketball, table tennis and volleyball.
