Rehab technology is a branch of engineering that deals with the development of technologies that help physically disabled individuals function more normally. As a professional in this field, you may find work as a rehabilitation engineering technologist, a job in which you would use engineering principles to design, modify and customize equipment, such as wheelchairs, ramps and special vehicle controls. You may also choose to study rehab technology as part of your education towards a career as a physical or occupational therapist.

Employment Information

If you're interested in working in the rehab technology field, now may be a good time to pursue the field. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment for both physical and occupational therapists is expected to grow much faster than average over the 2012-2022 decade (www.bls.gov). Those with specialized knowledge in areas such as elderly care and rehabilitation for those with chronic conditions are expected to see some of the best opportunities. The BLS also reported the average salary for physical therapists was $81,110, as of May 2012, and $76,400 for occupational therapists.

How Can I Work in Rehab Technology?

Education

Some degree programs in rehab technology are available at the undergraduate level, but graduate programs are most common in this field. As a student in a rehab technology graduate certificate program, for instance, you may take courses on medical aspects of disability, applied rehabilitation technology services, ergonomics, electrical engineering and lifestyle assessment. Students interested in working in rehab technology may also choose to pursue graduate degrees in related fields, including rehabilitation engineering, biomedical engineering, assistive technology, occupational therapy, vocational rehabilitation and special education.

Topics of study in these types of programs can include rehabilitation and assistive technology, psychology and sociology of disability. Programs are heavily research-based and often include clinical internships and collaborative projects.
