Job Outlook and Salary Statistics

Employment of small engine mechanics was projected to grow six percent from 2012-2022, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Employment for motorcycle mechanics was projected to grow nine percent, and employment of motorboat mechanics was predicted to increase six percent during this time. The number of jobs for outdoor power equipment and other small engine mechanics was expected to grow five percent during that same period (www.bls.gov).

In May 2012, motorcycle mechanics made an average annual salary of $34,910, the BLS reported. Motorboat service technicians and mechanics made an average annual salary of $37,140, and outdoor power equipment and other small engine mechanics had average earnings of $31,820 per year during that same period, the BLS noted.

Education and Training Information

To become a mechanics professional, you should possess a minimum of a high school diploma. You can jumpstart your career by taking relevant courses in high school, such as autobody technology, mathematics and science classes. You might also be able to gain experience and on-the-job training by obtaining a position in a repair shop.

Diplomas and Certificates

If you want to study small engine repair technologies, you could enroll in a marine and small engine program, an outdoor power equipment program or a small engine repair technology program. These programs are mostly available at the certificate and diploma level at community colleges and technical schools. Programs in small engine repair might include studies in brake systems, industrialized motors, electric technologies, operating systems, powerplants, protection, specialized instruments and suspension.
