Education and Training

To become an Adult Nurse Practitioner, you must first complete a bachelor's degree program in Nursing. A bachelor's program in Nursing will prepare you to become a registered nurse (RN). It will also prepare you for the graduate study required to become an Adult Nurse Practitioner.

There are many different types of NP programs at the graduate level. Although some accept students with any type of bachelor degree, these programs are rare. Most require students to hold a degree in Nursing as well as a nursing license.

NP programs usually award master's degrees, but there are an increasing number of programs that award post-master's certificates and doctorate degrees as well. While enrolled in these programs, you will receive the theoretical and clinical based-education needed to offer primary care to adult patients.

Coursework that is specific to an Adult Nurse Practitioner program includes instruction in middle age and older adult care. Extra emphasis is put on adult health promotion and maintenance as well as disease prevention across the lifespan. Some ANP programs also offer training that is specific to an area of interest in adult health, such as pulmonary care, HIV/AIDS or occupational health.

Licensing and Certification

Adult Nurse Practitioners must be licensed in the state they wish to practice in. To earn a license, you need to hold a degree from an accredited institution and pass a state licensing examination. After earning a license, you can also apply for national certification from the American Nurses Association (ANA) or other professional nursing boards, such as the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). A national certification proves that you are recognized as an expert healthcare provider.
