10 Crucial Things All Students Should Make Time For

When you get to college, you might find that you aren't managing your time wisely. It's a good idea to make healthy habits by taking time for yourself to retain your energy and focus on what really matters to you. We have some advice on the non-homework things that you should always fit into your schedule.

Things All Students Should Make Time For

As a student, you probably have an intensely busy schedule: studying that needs doing, homework to turn in, sports or club activities... the list goes on. Besides those academic obligations, though, there are other things you've just got to make time for. Some of them can even help you get studying and homework done better and faster!

Sleep

This seems to be the number one thing that college students neglect. Without parents around to set a bed time or curfew, it can be all too tempting to put sleep off until you're only getting four or five hours a night. Despite what some students may say, you cannot get by regularly on so little sleep. Being tired hinders your ability to learn in class and concentrate on homework. Even if you have things to do, vow to do them in the morning after a full night's rest.

Seeing Friends and Significant Others

Sometimes it feels like schoolwork can keep you from seeing important people in your life as often as you would like. Feeling neglected is painful for friends, and it may cause relationships to end. Set time aside nearly every day to at least spend a little while with people you care about. You'll notice you're happier and closer to your friends than ever. If you have a whole lot to do, why not have a study session with friends who also need to work?

Going Outside

You're not a vampire, so sometimes you do in fact need a little sunlight. Being in the sun every so often gets you much-needed vitamin D, and being in a new location with fresh air can really clear your head. Taking a short walk once a day will improve your overall health and will make it easier to focus on your studies later. If it's a nice day, consider studying and doing homework outside where you can enjoy natural, non-fluorescent lighting.

Hygiene

Showering, brushing teeth and other necessary habits take time and can sometime feel like a hassle. Still, they need to be done. Showers and baths can relax you after a long day, and basic hand-washing helps prevent you from being ill. Brushing your teeth regularly will also keep you from getting gum diseases that can mess with your teeth later in life. Also, your friends will appreciate your being non-stinky.

Room-Cleaning

So, you thought you left chores behind, did you? Not so. Cleaning your room can serve to clear your mind and make it easier for you to study. It also helps keep your room free of mold, spiders, cockroaches, rodents and all sorts of other pests. Even if it's just picking up your dirty clothes or changing your sheets every few weeks, your health and peace of mind will thank you.

Calling Family

Remember those people at home called your parents? Well, they surely miss you. If you have siblings, there's no doubt that they miss you as well. Don't forget to give them a short call just to say hi and let them know that you're doing okay, rather than just asking for some spending cash. They'll feel good about it, and so will you. Also, if your family is paying for your education, don't forget to thank them every so often for the opportunity you have.

Eating Right

It can be hard to stay away from junk food or get all three meals per day into your busy schedule. That fattening food may taste good, but making a habit out of it is a bad idea. Make time to be sure you get fruits and vegetables into your diet and that you are eating breakfast every day. Eating breakfast makes it easier for you to remember information during those early classes and keeps your body in good working order for the rest of your daily activities.

Exercise

Studying and homework usually involve sitting in a chair for long periods of time without much movement. Make sure you take a little time to at least get your heart pumping harder every day. Go for a 5-minute jog or do some basic aerobic activity. Go to the gym a few times per week and you'll notice a difference in your energy levels as well as overall happiness. One of the best ways to ward off depression is with regular exercise.

Getting Off Campus

Sometimes a student just needs a change of scenery. Whether it's a short drive around town with friends or just a trip to the grocery store, make sure you get off campus once a week. Staying in the same place all the time can make you feel stuck or trapped, and it can keep you from being as happy and productive as you could be. Offer to go out with others when you do this. You won't be the only one feeling stir-crazy

Hobbies

Everyone has personal hobbies they like to indulge in. Maybe it's video games, maybe it's making model planes or maybe it's even cooking your own meals. As you enter into college to learn new things, don't forget about the old ones. Make sure you still spend time practicing the things you enjoy. It will let your head clear and keep you happy if you do things like this regularly. Plus, sometimes a student just needs 'me time,' and this is a great way to spend quality time with yourself.
