AlumniDate: An Unusual Solution to Campus Budget Problems

Public and private postsecondary institutions have always had to manage budget problems. AlumniDate.com, a niche dating and social networking site, has devised an unusual solution to attempt to assist colleges with this issue. Learn more about AlumiDate's creative, entrepreneurial and philanthropic endeavors here.

Since the massive recession that began shortly into this millennium, many colleges and universities throughout the U.S. have been forced to undergo financial withdrawal. This has spawned staff layoffs, program shutdowns and scholarship reductions. With enrollment increases, many schools have found it hard to keep up. AlumniDate has come up with a unique approach to try to provide aid to colleges throughout the country and attempt to turn a profit at the same time.

What's the Concept?

AlumniDate was started in Florida in early 2011 with the intention of donating a percentage of their sales to higher education institutions. The website is designed to cater to single adults who are interested in connecting and giving back. Subscribers can look for lost loves, old classmates, former club members or virtually any other individuals affiliated with a particular college or university who are also on the site.

To use the website, members create a profile of themselves and post their picture. They can search the site for others by name, college sports team or hobby. Once they find someone of interest, they can send cyber kisses and other displays of affection or start online chats. Subscribers can also access the AlumniDate blog, which offers dating tips and relationship advice. The cost to join AlumniDate is $29.95 per month, and discounts are offered for those who make up-front quarterly payments.

How Much Does AlumniDate Contribute?

From every monthly fee, the company contributes ten percent to the specific college or university chosen by the dater. Subscribers can also choose to have their portion go to a mass scholarship pot instead of a particular school fund. The general donations are designed to be distributed on an annual basis.

What's more, for the first 500 followers an institution receives, AlumniDate has committed to donating an extra 2.5% of each monthly subscription fee. For the next 500, they will provide a matching 2.5%. So in essence, once AlumniDate has a record of 1,000 connections to any one college or university, that school will get 15% of each affiliated subscriber's monthly fee. Who would've thought you could find a date and donate?
