What Levels of Certification Will I Need as an Anesthesia Technologist?

Prior to gaining certification as an anesthesia technologist, you will need to obtain certification as an anesthesia technician (Cer.A.T.) and complete two years of subsequent professional technician experience. Generally, states do not require you to have the specific technologist certification (Cer.A.T.T.), but you may be required by employers to maintain certification with the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians (ASATT).

What Are the Requirements for Certification?

To obtain certification, you will need to earn a certificate of completion or an associate's degree in an anesthesia technology program. Prior to certification, you will be required to obtain certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS). In addition to having professional experience as a technician, you will need to be tested for English proficiency, basic computer skills and your understanding of anesthesia technologist standards of care as outlined by ASATT.

Certification examinations, which are computer-based tests offered at over 100 locations throughout the U.S., test your knowledge of Joint Commission guidelines, handling and labeling of hazardous materials, technician training programs, pharmacology and drug inventory, anesthesiologist assistant compliance guidelines and the operation, sterilization and monitoring of several types of anesthesia delivery systems.

What Level of Education Can I Obtain?

You can earn an associate's degree from an accredited anesthesia technology program. ASATT-accredited programs must include basic instructional courses, specific technical instruction as well as clinical instruction and practice. As an alternative to an associate's degree program, you can either complete a post-baccalaureate certificate program or a major concentration within a bachelor's degree program. Certain programs and courses are available online.

What Courses Will a Program Offer?

You may be required to complete prerequisite courses in English or other humanities courses, such as professional ethics or speech communications. As you advance in your coursework you may concentrate on:

  • Mathematics
  • Anatomy
  • Physiology
  • Chemistry
  • Clinical monitoring
  • Pharmacology anesthesia
  • Cardiopulmonary physiology
  • Courses that outline regulations and compliance with corporate standards and statutory obligations

Many programs offer externships or a clinical practicum where you can gain hands-on experience.
