Animal Health Courses

Learn about educational programs that offer courses in animal health. Keep reading to explore the kinds of topics covered and the areas of specialization available.

What Courses Are Involved?

Animal health covers a large variety of programs that make up the fields of veterinary science, animal care, and specific animal sciences such as herpetology or invertebrate zoology. Programs in agribusiness may also cover animal health; depending on the school, specializations may be available in the particular study of swine, beef cattle, dairy cattle, horses or sheep. The study of animal health includes classes in core science competencies as well as field-specific classes. Example courses might include:

Health of Aquatic Animals

This type of course explores the care and keeping of the wide variety of animals that live in the water. Students studying aquatic animal health would learn about various species of mammals, fish, reptiles, and invertebrates, along with their ecosystems, anatomy, and the health issues they face.

Animal Biology

Before you can learn about animal health, you first need to learn about the anatomy and physiology of the animal itself. Animal biology courses will focus on the different physiological systems of various animal species, how they work, and how their issues affect the entire organism.

Animal Genetics

Genes are the living history of every living thing, and studying them gives students insight into different animal species. Students studying animal genetics will learn how animals inherit their traits and characteristics from their ancestors and how this information is applied to animal breeding and understanding animal diseases.

Nutrition for Animals

Because of their living environments, physical activity, and general lifestyle, many animals have very specific needs for what they eat and drink. An animal nutrition class would discuss things like variances in gastrointestinal systems, metabolism, and digestion.

Organic Chemistry

Chemistry is a basic requisite of anyone studying in the medical or health-related fields, including animal health. In organic chemistry courses, students will learn about the components and structures of the molecules present in living organisms.

Where Can I Find These Courses?

Animal health courses can often be found as part of on-campus degree programs as well as via independent distance learning courses. Programs that features animal health courses are offered at community colleges and through 4-year and postgraduate programs within university departments of agricultural or environmental science or veterinary medicine.
