Animal Reproduction Degree Programs

Read information on degree programs involving animal reproduction, examining topics such as how genetics affect offspring or how environmental factors influence reproductive success. See what undergraduate and graduate degrees are available, what you'll study and options for online education.

What Degrees Are Available in Animal Reproduction?

Degree programs in animal reproduction are typically offered at the master's and doctoral degree levels and can be found from a number of schools. Many of these programs are offered in animal science with concentrations in reproductive physiology. Prerequisites for admission usually include a bachelor's degree from an accredited school and satisfactory Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores.

Prior to applying, you may need to seek out a faculty advisor with whom you intend to work on your research. Some graduate programs require applicants to have an undergraduate degree specifically in animal science or biological science for consideration. Other schools only require certain prerequisite courses, such as organic chemistry, physiology and genetics.

Degree OptionsMaster's and doctoral degrees
Undergraduate OptionsBachelor's degree in a related field, like animal science
Common Graduate CoursesBiochemistry, genetics, statistics, animal nutrition, embryo biology
Online Degree OptionsNone, though a few courses in related topics may be offered online
Median Salary (2018)$64,020 (Agricultural and Food Scientists)
Job Outlook (2016-2026)7% growth (Agricultural and Food Scientists)

Are Undergraduate Degree Programs Available?

If you're looking for an undergraduate degree, you may want to consider majoring in animal science or zoology, which offer courses in reproductive physiology and genetics. These courses cover topics including genetic improvement and selection criteria in breeding. These programs also offer general education courses, in addition to coursework in anatomy, physiology, nutrition and biology. Coursework in animal science programs also explores issues in agriculture, animal husbandry and production practices, which can lay a strong foundation for further studies in animal reproduction.

What Courses Will I Take?

Courses in a graduate degree in reproductive physiology or animal reproduction covers molecular biology, physiology and statistics. If you're pursuing a master's degree, you may be able to choose between a thesis or non-thesis track, with the latter being meant for those interested in professional advancement but not in research. Common master's degree-level courses cover these additional areas:

  • Biochemistry
  • Animal nutrition
  • Statistics

If you're planning on enrolling in a doctoral degree program, you can expect to complete a dissertation on your research, which you'll typically be required to defend orally. Some programs also require doctoral students to teach in their areas of research for at least one semester. Some of the courses you can expect to take in a doctoral degree program include:

  • Embryo biology
  • Genetics
  • Endocrinology
  • Reproductive disorders

Are Programs Available Online?

Degree programs in animal reproduction aren't available online. If you're looking to learn more about animal reproduction through distance education, you may find individual course materials on agricultural practices and animal reproduction from a few schools.
