What You Need to Know

To work as an architect, you will need a minimum of a bachelor's degree in architecture. A civil engineering degree can substitute for an architecture degree. To ensure you meet the requirements to practice, you must graduate from an accredited program.

What Undergraduate Architecture Degree Programs are Available?

Architecture programs use labs, lectures and internships to teach the basic components of the field. In an undergraduate program, you can expect to study computer-aided drafting and design, building materials, structure types and building codes. You will practice your design skills in studio classes and gain real-world experience through multiple internships.

Civil engineering undergraduate programs teach electrical components, heating and air-conditioning systems, land development, surveying, statistics and construction supervision. Internships are not a common component of these programs. You can also expect to take extensive math and science classes, such as calculus, chemistry and biology. An Associate of Science or an Associate of Applied Science in Architecture may be available. A Bachelor of Architecture or a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering might be additional options.

What Graduate Architecture Programs are Offered?

Graduate program study topics include advanced drafting techniques, environmental sustainable design and international design styles. Most graduate programs offer the opportunity to study overseas. Master's degree students are required to complete a design project and doctoral students a dissertation. Some schools offered dual bachelor's and master's degree programs, which may reduce the length of time required to obtain both degrees. A Master in Engineering Management might be an online option. These courses might be required in a Master of Architecture degree program:

At the graduate level, you might also select a concentration, such as structural or environmental design. Classes include foundation engineering, structural stability theories and compound materials. What Should I Consider When Choosing a School?

You should consider the school's accreditation status. All states require architects to be licensed, which requires passing the Architecture Registration Exam (ARE). To be eligible to sit for the exam, you must graduate from a degree program accredited by the National Architectural Accreditating Board (NAAB).

Civil engineers must also be licensed. There are two levels of engineering licensure: engineer in training and professional engineer. To be licensed as an engineer in training, you must pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, to be licensed as a professional engineer, you must pass the Professional Engineering (PE) exam. Graduation from a school accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) is a prerequisite to sitting for both exams.

Attending a civil engineering program does not disqualify you from eligibility for the ARE, but requires you to submit your school and program information to the NAAB for review. If your program satisfies the NAAB's educational requirements you can take the exam. To increase the likelihood of NAAB approval, make sure that your program has been accredited by the ABET.
