If you earn a Bachelor of Science degree, you can apply your knowledge installing or designing different types of sound systems. You can also perform audio editing and similar tasks in the workforce. Available career options, depending on the type of degree you earn, may include:

  • Sound engineer
  • Audio editor

What Will I Learn as a Student?

Associate's degree programs in audio technology provide a very basic education in sound theory, audio editing and different types of sound systems. You can also learn about sound reinforcement, acoustics and MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) as well as taking a full general education curriculum.

While 4-year programs cover additional aspects of the same material in most cases, you may also be able to acquire hands-on experience working with sound equipment in class or through an internship experience. You can expect to learn about sound studios, acoustics and the software used to edit digital sound files. Other technology coursework covers mixing and synthesizing. You can also take courses that cover music production.

What Do I Need to Enroll?

The basic requirement for enrolling in a 2- or 4-year program is a high school diploma. However, many programs won't formally accept you until you've completed prerequisite coursework in calculus, statistics, trigonometry or algebra. You may also need to complete prerequisite coursework in communications, speech or composition.
