Read on to learn more about Ayurveda, degree program options and prerequisites. Schools offering Complementary & Integrative Therapy degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What Types of Online Ayurveda Degrees Can I Earn?

The practice of Ayurveda is designed to help patients avoid illnesses while enhancing wellness through treatment of the physical body, mental state and spirit. You'll find that most Ayurveda degree programs are based in India, where the practice originated several thousand years ago. In the United States, degree programs are very rare and not regulated by any national standard. However, many U.S. programs are acknowledged to follow common standards and practices by the National Ayurvedic Medical Association (NAMA), a membership-based organization that seeks to promote Ayurvedic principles throughout the United States. Though far from common, you can find some states that have approved Ayurveda schools as educational institutions.

In the U.S., you can earn a degree in Ayurveda at the associate's, bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree level. Though exceptionally rare, you can find these programs offered entirely online, with no residency requirements. These degrees build upon each other, with completion of each level serving as a requirement for entrance into the next.

What Will I Study?

Ayurvedic degree programs are often appropriate if you are a medical professional interested in expanding your breadth of knowledge and adding new elements to your practice. You'll learn about the theories and practices of Ayurveda, with the depth of content increasing with each subsequent degree level. You'll study the use in Ayurveda of oils, herbs and common spices in the healing process.

The practice of Ayurveda also includes methods for decontaminating and regenerating the patient's body through a process called Pancha Karma. This includes a draining process that may consist of blood-letting, enemas and vomiting. Additional elements of Ayurvedic medicine include massage, Yoga therapy, meditation and nutrition. In the most basic degree programs, you'll develop a foundational understanding of these elements; more advanced degree programs will actively prepare you to employ Ayurvedic principles with your patients.

How Are Online Programs Structured?

Online Ayurvedic degree programs are composed of largely self-directed study. Your program may combine correspondence course elements and online coursework. The former will include reading assignments that you can complete on your own schedule. The latter may consist primarily of lectures, which are recorded in order to enable a more flexible learning environment.

Are There Any Prerequisites?

Most programs will prefer that you have previous training in medical science. In some cases, a master's degree is required for admissions, though no specific prior degree field is stipulated. You may need to have taken prerequisite coursework in related sciences, such as organic biology, biochemistry and psychology.
