What is Ayurveda?

The word Ayurveda means 'science of life' and is considered one of the oldest medical services in the world. It consists of maintaining and establishing a strict regimen of rituals, meditation and routines in order to help treat chronic disorders. Some of these rituals change according to the seasons. They can include administering herbal remedies, adjusting food intake, prescribing exercise, evaluating impacts of social behavior and evaluating the effectiveness of the sensory system. Herbs used in this field include neem, gotu kola, tylophora, garlic, turmeric, ginger and cumin.

Each regimen is tailored specifically to the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the patient. Ayurvedic treatment is thought to help alleviate stress, hypertension, anxiety, depression, bronchitis, asthma and irritable bowel syndrome. Along with diet and herbal medication, ailments can also be treated with posture therapy, detoxification and breathing improvement exercises.

What Courses Can I Expect?

Individual courses can include lifestyle approaches, spiritual practices, pharmacology, rejuvenation techniques and herbology. Courses offered through all certificate programs in alternative and integrated medicine are usually introductory courses. Along with foundational Ayurveda courses, alternative and integrative medicine graduate certificate programs can also cover Chinese medicine, stress management, spiritual healing, fitness and energy medicine.

An undergraduate certificate program can provide courses in Ayurvedic terminology, philosophy, herbology, nutrition, disease management, marma, rasayana and panchakarma.
